A doula provides logistical and emotional support during labor and birth and other major life transitions.
Cochrane.org has found that having a doula present provides significant benefits during labor and birth with no adverse affects and says that “continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman’s social network, is experienced in providing labour support, and has at least a modest amount of training, appears to be most beneficial.”
A doula does not displace partner(s), family, and friend support if available, but augments it in a unique way.
As a doula:
- I offer a judgement-free zone
- I work to ensure your physical and emotional comfort.
- I work to include your support system — and also ensure their physical and emotional comfort — in everything that’s happening based on your preferences.
- I work to ensure you retain your right to informed consent and informed refusal during medical situations.
- I do not provide or recommend any particular medical procedures or interventions. But I help create space and access resources to help you make your own informed decisions.
- I respect your identity as a person in whatever way you choose to share that identity with me — including gender, orientation, and religious, spiritual, and cultural beliefs.
- I understand that everyone has different physical, emotional, and sensory needs. We’ll find what works for you.
- I am here to learn from you and witness your story.
- I am honored to share space with you in this time.
